| Bike Safety Institute LLC is a small company set up to promote bike
safety. The founder, Ron Jackson*, had an excellent safety record
flying light airplanes for ten years but a terrible safety record
after cycling for only four years. He came to the realization that
the disparity between the two safety records could be attributed to
education. Before being allowed to fly a pilot wannabe must
pass a rigorous written exam and demanding flight test with a flight
examiner from the FAA. Even though a cyclist is required to follow
vehicle laws there is no written exam or road test to ride a
bicycle in traffic on public roads. It is hoped this web site will
help improve the appalling accident record of cyclists. All you have
to do to confirm the poor cycling accident rate is ask a cyclists
about his accident experience or the experience of his riding
buddies. An important reason the cycling accident rate is relatively
unknown: there is no requirement to report them. Only
cycling accidents involving an automobile must be reported and that
amounts to only about 20% of all cycling accidents according to many
studies. Quoting from Joe Friel's book Cycling Past 50 page

in a study done by the American Academy of Orthopedic Surgeons that
reviewed reasons for hospital visits in 1995. *LCI: League (of American Bicyclists) Certified
